Rivian Automotive is planning layoffs that could trim its workforce by about 5%. The company grew too quickly in some areas, Bloomberg reported. Rivian’s shares were down about 7% in mid-afternoon trading following the news. The Irvine, California-based company has about 14,000 employees.

After several quarters of impressive growth, Tesla is starting to feel the pinch. The US automaker announced on Saturday that, between April and June, it has produced only 258,580 electric vehicles and delivered only 254,695 cars. By comparison, it was able to build 305,407 EVs and deliver 291,189 of them in the first three months of 2022. However, it claims that it produced more cars in June 2022 than any previous month in its history.

Tesla has introduced a software update that scans for potholes in its cars. The update will trigger the adaptive suspension in supported vehicles to adjust the ride height for more comfort. The ride adjustment will only work in Tesla Model S and Model X cars with adaptive suspensions. It's not clear if the Model 3 or Y vehicles also scan for rough roads.

Tesla was hamstrung during the period ending June 30, 2022, by parts shortages, supply chain snarls and Covid restrictions that forced China’s Shanghai factory to close or operate only partially for weeks.

CEO Elon Musk said he thought inflation was worse than reported and likely to last all of 2022. He also said global commodities supply constraints could hamper future production.
