Portugal may ban Huawei and other Chinese companies from participating in its 5G deployment, according to reports. According to Bloomberg, the Portuguese government recommended this week that local telcos be banned from procuring 5G equipment from vendors outside the European Union or from countries that are not part of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) or the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OCED). In a statement released on Thursday by Portugal's High Council for Cybersecurity, the Portuguese government said companies outside these jurisdictions pose a "high risk" to the security of Portugal's wireless networks. The document does not specifically mention Huawei, but since China is not a member of North Atlantic Treaty Organization, Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe, or the European Union, if Portugal's cabinet approves the security council's recommendation, the country could ban the company. Huawei, along with other Chinese vendors such as ZTE, could be effectively excluded from participating in Portugal's 5G network.

The next-generation technology needs to solve two major challenges: it must have superior performance in all kinds of network transmission parameters compared to 5G, and it must reduce power consumption to improve energy consumption efficiency. The key characteristics of 6G are the integration of the non-terrestrial networks (NTN), the adoption of sub-terahertz (THz) frequencies, and free space optical (FSO) satellite communication in a bid to fulfill the needs of full self-driving technologies and IoT applications in rural areas, key challenges for 6G's development.

The department of telecommunications (DoT) is working on freeing up more spectrum for 5G services that could be auctioned in the next financial year starting April 1. Officials aware of the details told ET that along with mid-band spectrum (1 GHz to 6 GHz), DoT is also looking at the sub-6 GHz bands or the milli-meter wave band (mmWave), particularly between 37 GHz and 42 GHz, for the next-gen services.

China Broadnet, 5G 모바일 서비스 출시

China Broadnet is the country's newest licensed mobile operator. The state-backed operator was created by merging local cable and television broadcasters. It was issued a 5G licence in June 2019 and will be formally inaugurated in 2020. China Mobile is deploying, operating and maintaining the network. Both providers will have access to the network, while China Broad net has been granted temporary wholesale access to China Mobile’s 4G and 2600MHz 5G networks.
