SoftBank Group has announced the acquisition of Arm-based server chip design startup Ampere Computing for $6.5 billion. The deal is expected to be completed in the second half of 2025. Ampere's major investors, Carlyle Group and Oracle, have agreed to sell their stakes. After the acquisition, Ampere will continue to operate as an independent subsidiary and maintain its headquarters in Santa Clara, California. SoftBank Chairman Masayoshi Son stated that this acquisition will strengthen the company's commitment to AI innovation in the United States. Ampere currently employs 1,000 semiconductor engineers. Ampere's Arm-based chips have the advantage of higher energy efficiency compared to Intel and AMD's x86 architecture chips. The company's founder, Renee James, established Ampere in 2017 based on her 28-year career at Intel.
