SoftBank's bad luck continues. In 2021, the Japanese investment giant invested more than $170 million in a little-known social media app, IRL, and turned it into a unicorn. The company was later valued at $1.17 billion, but IRL was found to have completely manipulated its user numbers. The Information, an IT publication, reported that 95% of IRL's 20 million users were fake. In fact, IRL is shutting down the app. The robotic pizza maker, which recently invested $400 million, is closing its doors and liquidating its assets.
