At its Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC25) held on June 10 (local time), Apple unveiled major software updates centered on artificial intelligence (AI). The event introduced new features such as Liquid Glass, Tahoe, and ChatGPT Playground, but overall, the announcements offered few surprises. Apple has released beta versions of its new operating systems for testing, with full versions set to launch this fall as free upgrades. Notably, iOS 26 includes enhanced real-time language translation features. When users engage in voice conversations with speakers of other languages, the system provides simultaneous spoken and written translations in the other person's language, with replies also translated in real time. In FaceTime, live captions are displayed while maintaining the original foreign-language audio, and in the Messages app, translated text appears directly below the original message. These features are powered by Apple’s own on-device AI models, meaning all translations are processed locally without relying on remote data centers. However, the real-time translation feature will initially be limited to a few languages. For Phone and FaceTime one-on-one calls, only U.S. and U.K. English, French (France), German, Portuguese (Brazil), and Spanish (Spain) are supported. The Messages app supports a wider range of languages, including Korean, Japanese, and Simplified Chinese.
