23andME, a leader in the U.S. direct-to-consumer genetics (DTC) genetic testing market, has announced that the profiles of 6.9 million people have been compromised. "In some cases, the compromised information included family trees, birth years, current residences, photos, and personal DNA information," 23andMe said. 23andMe is a DTC provider with 49.2% of the U.S. genetic testing market. DTC service provider that allows consumers to analyze their genetic information to provide health-related information services. The company is currently notifying all customers of the breach and advising them to change their passwords and increase account security.
