Tesla CEO Elon Musk promised to introduce robotaxis in the San Francisco Bay Area, but it has emerged that the actual service does not involve autonomous vehicles, sparking confusion and concern among regulators. Authorities have pressed Tesla for answers and called on the company to clear up public confusion. Musk’s robotaxi initiative is seen as a key pledge underpinning Tesla’s $1 trillion valuation and his proposed multibillion-dollar compensation package. In July, Musk told investors that after completing a small-scale test run in Austin, Texas, Tesla would rapidly expand the service to markets like San Francisco, adding that regulatory approval was in progress. Earlier that month, Musk had declared on X (formerly Twitter) that Tesla would “probably deploy robotaxis in a month or two” in San Francisco.
