According to two sources familiar with the incident, hackers took details from OpenAI employees by eavesdropping on them discussing the latest technology in online forums. Fortunately, the hackers were unable to access key systems that store and develop artificial intelligence. OpenAI executives informed employees of this incident at a company-wide meeting held at the San Francisco office in April 2023. They also reported this to their board of directors but decided not to make the incident public because no customer or partner information was stolen. Management determined that the hacker was an individual with no ties to a foreign government, so they did not consider him a significant threat to national security, and they did not notify the FBI or other law enforcement agencies.
