Waymo has issued a software recall for 1,200 robotaxis that were involved in low-speed collisions with roadway objects such as gates and chains. The recall was implemented late last year, and the company submitted related reports to the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). NHTSA identified seven incidents between December 2022 and April 2024 in which robotaxis collided with stationary or semi-stationary objects, and began a preliminary investigation in May of last year. No injuries were reported from these incidents. Waymo significantly reduced the risk of such collisions through a software update rolled out in November last year. The company currently operates a total of 1,500 robotaxis in Austin, Los Angeles, Phoenix, and San Francisco. Additionally, Waymo conducted software recalls earlier last year following a collision between a Jaguar I-Pace robotaxi and a utility pole in June, as well as after two robotaxis crashed into the same pickup truck being towed by a tow truck in February.
