Anthropic's AI-powered chatbot Claude has finally added web search capability, a feature that had long been missing from its arsenal. Currently available in preview for paid users in the U.S., with support for free users and additional countries coming soon. Users can enable web search in their profile settings through the Claude web app, after which Claude will automatically search across various websites to inform certain responses. This feature currently only works with the latest model, Claude 3.7 Sonnet. Anthropic explained in their blog, "When Claude incorporates information from the web into its responses, it provides direct citations so you can easily fact-check sources." While this feature expands Claude's knowledge base with real-time insights, brief testing revealed that web search didn't consistently trigger for current events-related questions. This update brings Claude to feature parity with rival AI chatbots like ChatGPT, Google's Gemini, and Mistral's Le Chat, though concerns remain about the potential for hallucinations or mis-citations of web sources.
