Tesla has taken the first step towards launching its robotaxi service in California. Reuters reported on February 27 that the company has applied for a transportation charter-party carrier permit from the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC). This application will allow Tesla to own and control a fleet of vehicles, but it is separate from the permit for operating autonomous vehicles. Currently, Tesla is only approved to test autonomous vehicles with safety drivers in California. CEO Elon Musk has announced plans to launch driverless ride-sharing services in California and Texas this year. However, additional regulatory approvals will be necessary to provide actual driverless taxi services. Tesla declared its shift to the robotaxi business last year in response to slowing demand for electric vehicles. The company recently unveiled the 'Cybercab', a robotaxi concept without a steering wheel, and announced production plans for 2026. However, industry experts warn that it could take Tesla several years to commercialize its robotaxi service due to the challenges of autonomous driving technology.
