Volkswagen and an Italian car owners' organization announced today that they have reached a settlement worth $54 million (more than 5 billion euros) to end the legal battle over the Dieselgate emissions scandal. The settlement will provide payments of up to €1100 to more than 60,000 car owners affected by the emissions cheating. Dieselgate (Abgasskandal, VW-Abgasskandal, VW-Skandal, VW-Abgasaffäre, Abgasaffäre, Dieselgate) is a fraud scandal that came to light in 2015 when it was discovered that European automakers, including Volkswagen, had been manipulating the emissions of diesel cars, which have been criticized for their harmful nitrogen oxide emissions. They were literally caught lying.[2] Eventually, governments, including the United States, took action. While Volkswagen was the most widely publicized, the scandal implicated most of the European automakers that produce diesel cars and SUVs, including Audi, Porsche, Skoda, and Seat, as well as Fiat, Chrysler, Opel under the Stellantis umbrella, and the Mercedes-Benz, Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi Alliance. Commenting on the settlement, Volkswagen of Italy said: “We remain committed to our Italian customers. This settlement brings to an end years of litigation and provides a mutual solution for all parties involved.”
폭스바겐과 이탈리아 자동차 소유자 단체는 15일(현지시간), "디젤게이트 배출가스 스캔들에 대한 법적 분쟁을 종결하기 위해 5천4백만 달러(약 732억 2,400만 원)에 해당하는 합의에 도달했다"고 발표했다. 해당 합의에 따르면 배출가스 부정행위로 영향을 받은 6만 명 이상의 자동차 소유자에게 최대 1100유로(약 162만 4,000 원)까지 지급될 예정이다. 디젤게이트(Abgasskandal, VW-Abgasskandal, VW-Skandal, VW-Abgasaffäre, Abgasaffäre, Dieselgate)는 폭스바겐을 비롯한 유럽 자동차 회사들이 유해한 질소산화물 배출로 비판받아온 디젤 자동차의 배출가스량을 조작해온 사실이 2015년 뒤늦게 발각되면서 밝혀진 사기 스캔들이다. 말 그대로 거짓으로 광고하다 걸린 셈이다. 결국 미국을 비롯한 각국 정부가 나서게 됐다. 폭스바겐이 가장 널리 알려졌지만 폭스바겐 그룹의 자회사인 아우디, 포르쉐, 스코다, 세아트 이외에도 스텔란티스 산하의 피아트, 크라이슬러, 오펠 그리고 메르세데스-벤츠, 르노-닛산-미쓰비시 얼라이언스 등 디젤 승용차 및 SUV를 생산하는 유럽 자동차 회사들의 대부분이 여기에 연루되어 있는 것으로 밝혀졌다. 폭스바겐 이탈리아 지부는 이번 합의에 대해 "우리는 계속해서 이탈리아 고객들을 위해 노력하고 있다. 이번 합의는 수년간의 소송을 종결시키고 관련 모든 당사자에게 상호 해결책을 제공할 것이다"라고 말했다.
