A massive power outage occurred on the afternoon of the 1st in Spain and neighboring countries France and Portugal. The blackout paralyzed homes, businesses, and transportation infrastructure in major cities such as Madrid, Barcelona, and Lisbon, and also led to the suspension of the Madrid Open tennis tournament. Subway and train services in Spain and Portugal were halted, and with traffic lights and road signs out of operation, transportation authorities in both countries advised drivers to avoid using their vehicles. Airports operated on backup generators, causing disruptions to air travel. Portuguese energy supplier REN explained that the outage was caused by a rare atmospheric phenomenon known as “induced atmospheric vibration,” resulting from extreme temperature fluctuations in Spain and causing faults in the European grid’s very high voltage lines. According to Spain’s grid operator, it could take up to 10 hours to restore power nationwide, while full normalization of the European grid may take up to a week.
