Google has launched Gemini CLI, an open-source AI tool designed to run locally from developers' terminals. The tool connects Google's Gemini AI models to local codebases, allowing developers to make natural language requests for code explanation, feature writing, debugging, and command execution. Gemini CLI competes directly with other command-line AI tools such as OpenAI's Codex CLI and Anthropic's Claude Code. The launch follows the rising popularity of Google's Gemini 2.5 Pro model released in April, which has driven increased usage among developers and prompted Google to build direct relationships with the developer community. Beyond coding, the tool enables video creation with Google's Veo 3 model, research report generation with Deep Research agent, and real-time information access through Google Search. Google is open-sourcing Gemini CLI under the Apache 2.0 license to encourage developer contributions on GitHub. Free users can make 60 model requests per minute and 1,000 requests per day, which is roughly double the average number of requests developers typically make.
