The reason major IT companies such as Apple and Google were able to continue providing services despite the TikTok ban in the United States has been revealed through official letters. Attorney General Pam Bondi, in letters sent to major platforms including Apple, Google, Amazon, and Oracle, stated that “the President determined that an abrupt shutdown of the TikTok platform would interfere with the constitutional duties of national security and foreign affairs,” and clarified that “Apple and Google may continue to provide services to TikTok without incurring any legal liability”. In a follow-up letter dated April 5, she further stated that “the Department of Justice is irrevocably relinquishing any claims the United States might have had regarding actions taken during the relevant period in connection with TikTok and ByteDance-related apps.” These letters were made public through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request. Since President Trump took office, enforcement of the TikTok ban has been suspended three times, and recently, the President said details about TikTok’s new ownership could be made public within two weeks.
