China's Cyberspace Administration (CAC) has summoned Nvidia to explain alleged "back-door safety" risks associated with its H20 chips. The cybersecurity regulator said Thursday it interviewed Nvidia regarding risks related to potential tracking and remote control functions of the H20 chips, requesting explanations and relevant proof. The inquiry was based on recent reports of "serious security issues" involving Nvidia's chips and demands from US lawmakers to add tracking features to advanced chips. The Trump administration had restricted H20 chip exports in April before reversing the ban in mid-July, with China's investigation coming just two weeks after exports resumed. A bipartisan group of US lawmakers introduced a bill in May requiring AI processor makers, including Nvidia, to incorporate technology verifying chip locations before export. An Nvidia spokesperson told AP that "Cybersecurity is critically important to us. NVIDIA does not have 'backdoors' in our chips that would give anyone a remote way to access or control them." Nvidia shares rose 1.9% in pre-market trading Thursday.
