On August 7, Trump posted on Truth Social, stating that Tan is in “a serious conflict of interest” and that “there is no other solution to this problem.” Trump’s demand came after Senator Tom Cotton raised concerns about Intel’s business ties with China and questioned Tan’s stakes in Chinese companies, citing potential national security risks. Tan is reportedly known for having invested in numerous Chinese advanced manufacturing and semiconductor companies. Tan was appointed as Intel’s CEO in March this year to lead the company’s turnaround, announcing a major 15% workforce reduction and pushing to expand the foundry business. However, Intel has so far failed to secure major external customers for its foundry division, warning of possible delays or suspension of certain production lines. Amid Trump’s aggressive policy to strengthen protection of the U.S. semiconductor industry, the call for Lip-Bu Tan’s resignation is stirring significant controversy within Intel and across the semiconductor sector. On the day of Trump’s announcement, Intel’s stock price fell by more than 2 percent.
