Alphabet-owned autonomous driving company Waymo has begun testing its robotaxis in Denver and Seattle. During this trial phase, safety drivers—who are Waymo employees—will sit behind the wheel to manually operate the vehicles, which include fully electric Jaguar I-PACE and Geely Zeekr robotaxis. Waymo has already launched commercial services in Austin, Atlanta, San Francisco, Phoenix, and Los Angeles, and plans to gradually expand operations nationwide. The company also recently obtained a permit to conduct test operations in New York City. Waymo said it will operate up to a dozen test vehicles in each of the two new markets. Its global competition includes Baidu’s Apollo Go in China, while Tesla is also trialing manned robotaxi services in Austin and San Francisco.
