The U.S. Federal Communications Commission (FCC) has launched a comprehensive investigation into the activities of Chinese companies included in the 'Covered List', such as Huawei, ZTE, and China Telecom, within the United States. This marks the first large-scale investigation since the Biden administration's ban on the sale of telecommunications equipment and services from these companies in 2022. FCC Chairman Brendan Carr revealed that there are indications that some Chinese companies are circumventing the ban and still conducting business in the U.S. These companies reportedly claim that the ban does not apply to certain operational methods and are continuing their activities through private or unregulated means. This investigation is the first major initiative of the newly established Council for National Security within the FCC, aiming to strengthen security in the U.S. technology and telecommunications sectors. The FCC plans to extensively gather information on the U.S. business activities of companies on the Covered List and those supporting them, stating that it will close all loopholes that have allowed for the evasion of regulations.
