U.S. automaker General Motors (GM) has announced that it is expanding the operational range of its self-driving technology, Super Cruise, by approximately 750,000 miles (1.27 million kilometers) on local and regional highways in the United States and Canada. The upgrade, which will be completed by 2025, nearly doubles the Super Cruise network, which currently stands at 400,000 miles (637,000 kilometers). First launched in 2017, Super Cruise is a technology that enables fully hands-free driving under supervision, with the driver always ready to take the wheel. Super Cruise uses sophisticated GPS, cameras, radar sensors, and a driver attention system to ensure the driver is paying attention. However, Super Cruise can only operate on designated roads that have been LiDAR scanned by GM's third-party contractors. The LiDAR scans generate maps that show lane data, terrain, road curve radii, and more, and Super Cruise adjusts its speed as needed based on this information. GM plans to continue to expand the reach of Super Cruise operations in the future. It will also invest in the development of autonomous driving technologies to provide a safer and more convenient driving experience.
