Ex-Google employees’ A.I. chatbot startup valued at $1 billion after Andreessen Horowitz funding Character.AI, an artificial intelligence start-up founded by two former Google employees, is capitalizing on venture capitalists’ unquenchable thirst for deals in technology’s hottest space. The two-year-old company said on Thursday that it raised $150 million at a $1 billion valuation in a funding round led by Andreessen Horowitz. Noam Shazeer and Daniel De Freitas, who helped created the architecture used in popular chatbots, left Google in 2021 and founded Character.AI the same year.

Google has suspended Pinduoduo, a popular Chinese budget shopping app, from its Play Store after finding malware in versions of the app. In a Tuesday statement, Google said versions of the app that are not in the Play Store have been found to contain malware. “We have suspended the Play version of the app for security concerns while we continue our investigation,” a Google spokesperson said.

A company representative told CNN it will be a separate, complementary experience to Google Search, and users can also visit Search to check its responses or sources. Google said in a blog post it plans to “thoughtfully” add large language models to search “in a deeper way” at a later time.

Google’s security research unit is sounding the alarm on a set of vulnerabilities it found in certain Samsung chips included in dozens of Android models, wearables and vehicles, fearing the flaws could be soon discovered and exploited. In a blog post, Google’s Project Zero head Tim Willis said the in-house security researchers found and reported 18 zero-day vulnerabilities in Exynos modems produced by Samsung over the past few months, including four top-severity flaws that could compromise affected devices “silently and remotely” over the cellular network.

Google is still facing the fallout from its announcement of the artificial intelligence engine called Bard. Executives have been working to clear up the confusion created by the announcement and the company's handling of it, but instead, have created further problems among staff. Most of the top-rated issues in a recent all-hands meeting related to the priorities around Bard. Staffers called Google's initial public presentation "botched" and "un-Googley". The company has been trying to separate Bard from search. However, this apparent pivot in the initial strategy has created more confusion among employees, with inconsistent answers given by executives.
