After initial reports that Disney's second round of layoffs this year would be "massive," the studio began laying off thousands of employees this week. This is the second of three rounds of layoff announcements as part of a cost-cutting crusade to get Disney back on its financial feet. Reuters reports that Disney's third round of layoffs will be at the end of the year. Hourly workers were not expected to be affected by the layoffs, but the company said the cuts would come across several of its corporate divisions, including ESPN, Disney Entertainment, its product division, and the corporate leadership of Disney Parks.

Peter Rice was the chairman of general entertainment content at Disney. Rice was "an ill fit with Disney's corporate culture," sources told The New York Times. Rice joined Disney during the acquisition of 21st Century Fox’s television and film assets in 2019. He previously served as president of 21ST Century Fox and chairman and CEO of Fox Networks Group.
