The UK has called on Meta not to introduce end-to-end encryption to Instagram and Facebook Messenger without safeguards to protect children from sexual abuse, after the online safety bill was passed by parliament. Meta, which already encrypts messages in WhatsApp, plans to bring end-to-end encryption to Messenger and Instagram direct messages, calling the technology a safety and security enhancement. UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she supports strong encryption for online users, but not at the expense of children's safety.

Meta described the accounts as spamouflage (a combination of spam and camouflage). They operated from offices across China and appeared to be staffed on a rotating basis, the company said. The announcement brings the total number of accounts Meta has taken down to more than 7,000.
