애플, 옵티스와의 4G 특허 분쟁에서 런던 항소심 패소

Apple has lost its patent infringement battle with Optis over fourth-generation mobile communications (4G) technology in the United Kingdom. The Court of Appeal in London on Thursday dismissed Apple's appeal seeking "a review of the first instance judgment that Apple infringed mobile technology company Optis' technology patents." The lawsuit between Apple and Optis began in 2019. Optis accused Apple of infringing on eight of its patents, which are essential to the 4G technology used in Apple's iPhones and iPads. Last year, the trial court ruled in Optis' favor, finding that "two of the eight patents are essential to 4G and that Apple infringed them."

지난달 14일 유럽연합(EU)은 법안 하나를 통과시켰는데 이게 제조사와 소비자들에게 파괴적 영향력을 예고하고 있다. 유럽 역내에서 소비자가 사용하기 쉽도록 탈착식 배터리 스마트폰을 의무화한다는 것이다. 현재 진행상황을 보자면 꼭 1년 반 후인 2025년 6월이나 7월부터 이 법규정이 시행된다. 이를 계기로 어떻게 착탈식 스마트폰 배터리가 사라지게 됐는지, 그 영향은 뭔지, 그리고 왜 EU는 탈착식 배터리 스마트폰을 의무화하려는지 알아봤다.

Apple is expected to release the iPhone 15 this fall, and it's also planning major upgrades to all of its major products. Bloomberg reported on Sept. 26 that Apple is expected to release a new 24-inch iMac, while the iPad Pro and iPad Air will also be refreshed with OLED displays. It also predicted a new Apple Watch Ultra and the next-generation Apple Watch 9 in two sizes.

Apple has announced on its official website that it is offering new software tools and technologies to support the development of dedicated apps for Vision Pro. Starting today, Apple's global developer community can use the VisionOS SDK to create new spatial computing apps for Vision Pro and VisionOS in productivity, design, gaming, and more. Next month, Apple will "open developer labs in Cupertino, London, Munich, Shanghai, Singapore, and Tokyo to provide a hands-on experience for developers to test their apps on Vision Pro hardware and receive support from Apple engineers," the company said.

Apple is in trademark litigation with Switzerland's largest fruit federation (FUS), which has a 111-year history. "Apple is asking Swiss authorities for broad intellectual property rights to the word 'apple,'" according to U.S. IT publications. The FUS's logo is a red apple topped with the white cross of the Swiss flag. "We don't even use a bite-sized apple as our logo, so it's hard to understand Apple's actions," said a FUS spokesperson in response to the lawsuit.

Apple has announced that it will no longer offer "financing" to customers purchasing SIM-free iPhones starting August 15. The Apple Card Monthly Installment (ACMI) option will be limited to customers with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon contracts. "Currently, purchasing an iPhone with ACMI at an Apple Store location requires a carrier connection with AT&T, T-Mobile, or Verizon," Apple said in a notice on its website.

On Dec. 12 (local time), Apple closed at $183.79 on the New York Stock Exchange, up 1.56% from the previous trading day. This is the highest price since $182.01 in January 2022. This pushed Apple's market capitalization to $289.1 billion, moving it closer to the $3 trillion mark. No other company on the NYSE, or any stock market in the world, has yet surpassed a $3 trillion market capitalization. The market is now looking at Apple's $190.73. This is Apple's all-time high in absolute terms, and a move above $190.73 would mark the $3 trillion mark.

Mark Zuckerberg, CEO of Facebook's parent company MetaPlatform, criticized Apple's Vision Pro mixed reality (MR) headset on Friday. "I was really curious to see what they (Apple) would come up with, and they didn't have a solution to a physical law that we haven't studied yet," he said of Apple's Vision Pro during an all-hands meeting. "That's a better sign of our progress," he said. The implication is that there's nothing special about the Vision Pro that Metz wasn't aware of, and he's expressing confidence that the company is ahead of the curve when it comes to VR devices.
