U.S. chipmaker Intel said on Monday it will produce chips for Taiwan’s MediaTek, one of the world's largest chip design firms. The manufacturing arrangement is one of the most significant deals Intel has announced since it launched its so-called foundry business early last year. A foundry business builds chips that other companies design and Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Co is the top player in that space. Intel has mainly built chips it designed itself.

Intel is adjusting some near-term spending plans, joining other tech companies in reassessing priorities amid global economic uncertainty. Intel said Wednesday that “prioritization in our spending will help us weather macroeconomic uncertainty, execute on our strategy and meet our commitments to customers, shareholders, and employees.” America’s largest chip maker by sales also said that it sees itself at the start of a long-term growth cycle for the semiconductor industry.

미국 에너지부 산하 오크리지국립연구소(ORNL)의 ‘프런티어’(Frontier)가 세계 1위 슈퍼컴이자 세계 최초의 ‘엑사(exscale)급 슈퍼컴퓨터’로 공식 기록됐다. 엑사급 슈퍼컴퓨터란 1초에 110경 회, 즉 무려 10의 18승 속도로 계산을 할 수 있는 고성능 컴퓨터다. 지난 달 30일 함부르크에서 열린 세계슈퍼컴퓨팅컨퍼런스(ISC)에서 나온 톱500의 발표 내용이다. 하지만 일각에서는 이 발표에 의문을 제기하고 있다. 세계 최초의 엑사급 슈퍼컴은 지난해 상반기 중국이 개발해 가동 중인 2개의 슈퍼컴이라는 지적이 그것이다.

가트너, 2021년 글로벌 반도체 매출, 전년 대비 26%↑

가트너 조사결과, 지난해 반도체 시장 규모는 2020년 대비 26.3% 증가한 5950억달러로 파악됐다. 삼성전자는 2021년 매출 731억달러(약 90조원)를 기록하면서 시장점유율 12.3%로 1위 자리에 올랐다.
