엔비디아가 PC와 노트북에 들어가는 새로운 AI PC용 GPU를 발표하면서 인텔과 AMD를 긴장시키고 있다. 지난해 10월 퀄컴이 PC용 AI칩 스냅드래곤X 엘리트를 내놓은 데 이은 연이은 후발 업체들의 AI PC용 칩 전쟁 선언이다. 이런 흐름은 9일 개막돼 오는 12일까지 열리는 미국 라스베이거스가전쇼(CES 2024)에서 뚜렷하게 드러나고 있다. 이 행사의 올해 주제가 ‘AI’다. 그리고 실제로 컴퓨터, 전기자동차, 로봇 등 모든 기기에 AI 연산용 칩이 들어간 이른바 ‘온디바이스(On-Device)AI’가 주무대를 차지하고 있다.

Qualcomm said it will supply Apple with 5G modems for smartphones through 2026. Qualcomm didn't disclose specific terms of the deal, but said it was similar to previous agreements. Apple accounted for about 21% of Qualcomm's $44.2 billion in revenue in fiscal 2022, according to UBS estimates. Shares of Qualcomm jumped nearly 4% on the announcement.

ARM has formed a solutions engineering team to develop prototype chips for mobile devices, laptops, and other electronics, and is reportedly working on semiconductor prototypes. Rumors of ARM's chipmaking moves have raised alarms in the semiconductor industry that it could become a competitor to some of its biggest customers, such as MediaTek and Qualcomm. The move is seen as a strategy to attract new customers and boost growth to increase its valuation as ARM seeks to list on the Nasdaq later this year.

사상 최대 규모의 1조원대 과징금 부과를 둘러싼 공정거래위원회와 글로벌 통신용 칩 제조사 퀄컴 간 소송이 7년 만에 공정위의 승리로 끝났다. 13일 대법원 3부(주심 노정희 대법관)는 퀄컴 인코포레이티드, 퀄컴 테크놀로지 인코포레이티드, 퀄컴 CDMA 테크놀로지 아시아퍼시픽 PTE LTD 등이 공정위를 상대로 “과징금 부과 처분과 시정명령을 취소해달라”며 낸 소송에서 원고들과 피고의 상고를 모두 기각하고 공정위의 손을 들어준 원심 판결을 확정했다.

Qualcomm forecast second-quarter revenue and profit below Wall Street estimates on Thursday as the chipmaker grapples with the combined toll of weak demand for smartphones and a supply glut, a situation that is expected to persist into the first-half of this year. The stock, which initially rose 2.7% in after-hours trading, fell 3%. "The handset industry continues to experience reduced demand, and we are now expecting elevated channel inventory levels to persist at least through the first half of calendar 2023," Cristiano Amon, Qualcomm CEO told investors.

Qualcomm and satellite company Iridium IRDM Communications Inc. said they are introducing technology that would allow smartphone users to send and receive messages via satellite when regular cellular connectivity isn’t available.
