The first-ever audit of artificial intelligence use cases in U.S. federal civilian agencies has identified more than 1,200 active and planned projects as of fiscal year 2022. "From NASA to the Department of Education, AI is being used in the work of more than 200 government agencies," according to a report released Tuesday by the U.S. Government Accountability Office (GAO). Among federal agencies, NASA has the most, with 390 programs currently using or planning to use AI, followed by the Department of Commerce with 285. Of the government's AI use cases, 69% are focused on science and internal management.

NASA announced on its YouTube channel at 11 a.m. local time today that it is ready to share with the public its findings on samples taken from the 4.5 billion-year-old asteroid Bennu. The release comes less than three weeks after the Osiris-Rex spacecraft parachuted a capsule of Bennu's debris onto a Department of Defense training range in Utah.

The James Webb Space Telescope has detected water vapor around a comet in the asteroid belt. Until now, scientists thought comets could preserve water ice because of their relatively close proximity to the Sun. But this discovery raises a new conundrum. Although carbon dioxide typically makes up 10% of the potentially vaporized material on comets, Webb's instrument did not detect any carbon dioxide in the lead. The team speculates that either the carbon dioxide has dissipated over billions of years, or that Read formed in a relatively temperate part of the solar system where carbon dioxide is absent.

Orion traveled more than 1.4 million miles on a path around the Moon and returned safely to Earth, completing the Artemis I flight test. Orion performed two lunar flybys, came within 80 miles of the lunar surface, and traveled 270,000 miles from our home planet.
