Japan’s major media groups Nikkei and the Asahi Shimbun have jointly filed a lawsuit against AI search engine Perplexity in the Tokyo District Court, alleging copyright infringement. The two companies claim that Perplexity illegally copied and stored article content from their servers and then used it to provide inaccurate information, damaging the credibility of their publications. The plaintiffs are seeking ¥2.2 billion (about $15 million) each in damages, as well as the deletion of the stored articles. Nikkei warned that “Perplexity is free-riding on the work journalists have built through time and effort,” adding that “if left unchecked, this situation could undermine the very foundation of journalism.”

일본 주요 언론사 니케이와 아사히 신문이 AI 검색엔진 퍼플렉시티를 저작권 침해 혐의로 도쿄지법에 공동 제소했다. 두 회사는 퍼플렉시티가 자사 서버에서 기사 콘텐츠를 무단 복사·저장하고, 이를 기반으로 잘못된 정보를 제공해 신뢰도를 훼손했다고 주장했다. 원고 측은 각각 22억 엔의 손해배상과 저장된 기사 삭제를 요구했다. 니케이는 “퍼플렉시티가 기자들이 쌓아온 성과에 무임승차하고 있다”며 “방치될 경우 저널리즘의 토대가 위협받을 것”이라고 경고했다.
