Volvo and Aurora unveil their first jointly developed self-driving truck in three years. Volvo and Aurora have unveiled their first series-produced autonomous truck at the Advanced Clean Transportation Expo (ACT Expo) in Las Vegas. The truck comes three years after the companies first announced their collaboration in 2021. The truck was designed by Aurora, a company specializing in autonomous trucks and robotaxis, and manufactured by Volvo. It features Aurora's Level 4 autonomous driving system, Aurora Driver, and is equipped with a number of sensors, including state-of-the-art cameras, imaging radar, and LiDAR sensors that can detect objects up to 400 meters away. It is also equipped with “multiple steering systems, braking systems, communication systems, computing systems, power management systems, energy storage systems, and vehicle operation management systems” for safety. According to tech publication TechCrunch, the truck will begin hauling cargo across North America in the coming months, For safety, the trucks will have a human driver on board to ensure that control can be handed over whenever necessary. “We expect to announce pilot programs later this year with companies that have plans to use the Volvo trucks,” an Aurora spokesperson said.
