It has been revealed that Tesla has asked the city of Austin, Texas, not to disclose information related to its upcoming robotaxi service, which is scheduled to launch on June 10. Despite the fact that citizens are involuntarily participating in the operation of autonomous vehicles on public roads, Tesla is making strong efforts to keep all procedures and accident records strictly confidential. Previously, Tesla filed a federal lawsuit to prevent the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) from releasing data related to accidents involving its autonomous driving systems. In response to a public records request from Reuters, the city of Austin also decided to withhold certain documents at the request of a “third party” and has asked the Texas Attorney General’s office for an opinion. The robotaxis are reportedly geofenced to operate only within designated areas, but the specific streets where the vehicles will be driving have not been made public. Concerns over public safety and the right to access information are growing, as is criticism of Elon Musk’s secretive management style.
