Tesla reported a net profit of $409 million in the first quarter of 2025, a 71% decrease compared to the same period last year. For the first time, Tesla experienced a year-over-year decline in annual sales, and automotive revenue also dropped by 20%. This poor performance is attributed to a combination of factors, including weakening demand for electric vehicles, delivery and production disruptions, a decrease in average selling prices, and brand image deterioration linked to CEO Elon Musk’s far-right political activities. Tesla avoided a net loss by selling $595 million in regulatory credits, but without this, the company would have been close to operating in the red. Meanwhile, Tesla’s stock price rose in after-hours trading following the earnings release, buoyed by plans for affordable EV production and Musk’s announcement that he would focus more on Tesla’s operations. The company did not provide a growth outlook for this year and stated it would review its annual guidance during the second-quarter earnings announcement.
