The Chief Digital and Artificial Intelligence Office (CDAO) under the U.S. Department of Defense is providing up to $200 million in funding to leading AI companies such as Anthropic, Google, OpenAI, and xAI for the development of artificial intelligence technologies for military purposes. This funding focuses on building agentic AI workflows across a wide range of combat missions, and the Department of Defense plans to actively utilize AI technologies in key areas of national security through this initiative. Dr. Doug Matty, Chief Digital and AI Officer at CDAO, stated that the adoption of AI is fundamentally transforming the department’s ability to enhance the capabilities of warfighters and maintain a strategic advantage over adversaries, and emphasized that the military application of advanced AI technologies will be accelerated. As part of this measure, CDAO will provide the latest generative AI models to major military organizations, including Combatant Commands, the Office of the Secretary of Defense, and the Joint Staff.
