Microsoft's AI research team "accidentally" exposed 38 terabytes of personal data, including secrets, private keys, passwords, and more than 30,000 internal team messages, according to cloud security leader and software vendor Wiz. The exposed personal data included disk backups of two employees' workstations, Wiz said, adding that the breach occurred during the publication of an open-source training data bucket on GitHub. Microsoft countered that the breach was "responsibly reported under a coordinated vulnerability disclosure and has already been resolved," and that "no customer data was exposed and no other internal services were at risk."

The U.S., Europol and police in 14 countries seized the infrastructure of a suspected Russian marketplace that claimed access to 80 million stolen banking, social media and email accounts for sale to hackers seeking to break into companies and government offices worldwide, senior Justice Department officials said Wednesday. It also said it had arrested 119 people for distributing ransomware and trading illegal personal information.

Email addresses linked to more than 200 million Twitter profiles are circulating on underground hacker forums. The apparent data leak could expose the real-life identities of anonymous Twitter users. Irish regulators have fined Instagram €405m for violating children's privacy. The long-running complaint concerned children's data - particularly their phone numbers and email addresses. Instagram's owner, Meta, said it planned to appeal against the decision. It is the third fine handed to the company by the regulator.

The IRS accidentally released confidential taxpayer data for up to 120,000 people. The IRS said the data was from some non-501(c)(3) organizations. The data does not include Social Security numbers or detailed account-holder information. It was able to be downloaded for a period of time before the IRS fixed the mistake.
