당뇨병 환자들은 주사를 통해서만 인슐린을 투여받을 수 밖에 없다. 인슐린이 단백질이기에 경구(입으로)투약하면 위산(胃酸)에 녹고 소장까지 가려면 점액질로 인해 방해를 받는다. 미국 매사추세츠공대(MIT)연구진이 점액질의 방해를 뚫고 소장까지 내려가서 당뇨환자에게 인슐린을 투여해 주는 로봇알약을 개발했다.
