Microsoft has criticized Apple's new app store rules as a "step in the wrong direction," adding another voice of opposition to Apple's new plan to comply with EU tech regulations. Apple is proposing to charge a new "core technology fee" for apps that want to operate in the EU that use third-party app stores. This would mean that developers would have to pay €0.50 per app installation per year if they used a third-party app store to get more than 1 million downloads. Apple would also continue to charge a 17% fee to developers who use third-party payment processors. "Apple's new policy is a step in the wrong direction," said Sarah Bond, vice president of Xbox Game Creators and Ecosystem, in a post on Xbox, "We hope they will listen to feedback on their proposed plan and work toward a more inclusive future for all."

The court denied the request without explanation. For the past three years, the two companies have been battling over in-app purchases on iOS. Epic drew the ire of Apple (and Google) when it revealed that mobile Fortnite players could get discounts on V-Bucks, an in-game commodity, by bypassing the iOS and Android payment systems. Apple and Google take up to 30% of in-app transactions on iOS and Android as fees.
