PayPal, the online payments behemoth, has launched a new cryptocurrency pegged to the value of a dollar, aiming to bolster its position in the digital asset market. This new token, referred to as a 'stablecoin' with the intent of maintaining a $1 price, is the first of its kind from a major U.S. financial institution. PayPal already facilitates users to purchase and transact with bitcoin and other crypto tokens, and the company anticipates that users will employ its stablecoin for online gaming, other Web3 applications, and international payments. Named 'PayPal USD', this cryptocurrency will be redeemable for $1. For the issuance of the token, the company has partnered with Paxos Trust.
