2023년 국정감사에서도 여러가지 해묵은 문제들이 단골처럼 국감장 도마에 오르내리고 있다. 그 중에서도 글로벌 빅테크인 구글과 애플에 얽힌 문제들이 그렇다. 구글을 비롯한 글로벌 빅테크들의 국내 시장점유율이 늘어가고 있는 가운데, 인앱결제를 강제하는 갑질을 비롯해 법인세 편법 납부, ‘망 이용료’ 논란 등이 그것이다.

Google has been ordered to pay $1 million to a female executive who sued the company for gender discrimination. Google Cloud Engineering Director Ulku Rowe alleged that the company paid her less and denied her a promotion because of her gender. Ulku Rowe, director of cloud engineering at Google, accused the company of hiring her at a lower level and at a lower salary than men with less experience who were hired for similar positions at similar times, according to Bloomberg.

After Apple and Samsung, Google has rolled up its sleeves. Google has announced that it will begin production of its latest smartphone, the Pixel 8, in India starting next year. "We are working with international and local manufacturers to manufacture in India," Rick Ostero, Google's head of devices, said at the company's annual Google for India event here today. Ostero did not name specific partners, but the company is reportedly in talks with Taiwan's Foxconn and Indian manufacturer Dixon Technology.

Google is accelerating its move toward a future where online users don't need passwords to securely log into their accounts. Google announced on its official blog that it is making "passkeys" the default option for personal Google accounts. "We're making passkeys the default option after receiving positive feedback from our users," the company said, adding that it's a secure and fast alternative that eliminates the need for users to remember passwords. Passkey is a technology that allows users to access Google-enabled apps and sites without entering a password on their computer or phone. Instead of entering a password, users can log in using facial recognition, fingerprint, or a screen lock personal identification number (PIN).
