메타는 과거 페이스북 시절부터 페이스북의 뉴스피드를 기반으로 한 AI 연구를 지속해 왔다. 최근 몇 년 사이 구글, 애플을 중심으로 개인정보 보호 강화를 이유로 맞춤형 타깃 광고를 어렵게 하는 이용자 개인정보 차단 등의 조치가 이어지며 메타의 광고 비즈니스는 적잖은 타격을 입은 것이 사실이다. 하지만 메타는 이를 AI 기술로 극복하겠다는 의지를 드러내고 있다.

Meta has admitted that it used public posts on the Facebook and Instagram platforms to train its new artificial intelligence virtual assistant. Nick Clegg, Meta's president of global affairs, said the company used only public posts and excluded all private posts and private messages shared with friends and family to train the company's AI bot. Meta argued that its generative AI model, LLaMA 2, did not violate intellectual property laws and was prepared under the "fair use" doctrine. "The use of text to train LLaMA to statistically model language and generate original expression is inherently innovative and constitutes classic fair use," Meta said in its motion to dismiss.

The UK has called on Meta not to introduce end-to-end encryption to Instagram and Facebook Messenger without safeguards to protect children from sexual abuse, after the online safety bill was passed by parliament. Meta, which already encrypts messages in WhatsApp, plans to bring end-to-end encryption to Messenger and Instagram direct messages, calling the technology a safety and security enhancement. UK Home Secretary Suella Braverman said she supports strong encryption for online users, but not at the expense of children's safety.
