Meta has cut staff for the third time in three months. This brings the total to more than 20,000 jobs lost since November of last year. Meta has declared a "year of efficiency" and has begun another round of layoffs. The cuts are the third in a series of reductions first announced in March, which the company said would total 10,000 jobs.

Facebook parent company MetaPlatform has sold Giphy, a stock image search platform, following a divestiture order from the UK's antitrust authority, the Competition and Markets Authority (CMA). Shutterstock, an online stock image marketplace, announced that it is acquiring Giphy from Meta for $53 million. That's about $315 million less than the $415.8 million that Meta reportedly paid for Giphy in 2020, and the company said it expects to close all acquisition and sale talks within the next month.

Facebook parent MetaPlatform has been hit with its largest-ever fine for violating privacy laws in the European Union (EU). The Irish Data Protection Commissioner (DPC) said Facebook, which has its European headquarters in Dublin, Ireland, violated EU rules that require adequate safeguards to be in place for the transfer of personal data from the EU to the United States. The DPC fined the company €1.2 billion and gave it five months to stop transferring EU user data to the US.

Meta announced that it is developing the first custom chips for running AI models. The two unveiled chips will be integrated into Meta's proprietary AI development software, Pytorch, to power not only the Metaverse, but also generative AI tasks such as creating text, images, and video. This is the first time Meta has unveiled an in-house designed chip, demonstrating that the company is staying ahead of the generative AI curve by focusing on the development of three-dimensional virtual world metaverses and AI.

This marks the end of Meta's grand experiment to build an enterprise-grade customer service platform. Meta has announced an AI sandbox to help advertisers create alternative copy, text-prompted backgrounds, and image cropping for Facebook and Instagram ads. Meta's announcement comes after Andrew Bosworth, Meta's chief technology officer, said last month that the company plans to "use generative AI technology in ads." The feature is available to select advertisers and will be rolled out to more in July.

Meta announced Wednesday that it has shut down a network of more than 100 China-based accounts that posed as organizations in the United States and Europe and made pro-China claims. The Facebook and Instagram accounts, which included fictitious news organizations and posed as think tanks, appear to have used deepfake images developed through artificial intelligence to make the fake accounts appear legitimate, Meta said.

The Cambridge Analytica data breach occurred in March 2018, when a research team gathered large amounts of personal information to target voters in the 2016 U.S. presidential election and shared it with data analytics firm Cambridge Analytica.
