Microsoft began a five-day court battle with the U.S. Federal Trade Commission (FTC) today that will determine the future of its $68.7 billion acquisition of Activision Blizzard. The FTC is seeking a preliminary injunction to prevent Microsoft from closing the deal ahead of a separate court case that will begin on August 2. Microsoft is now desperate and has until July 18 to close its acquisition of Activision Blizzard. Otherwise, it will have to pay a $3 billion penalty to Activision Blizzard or renegotiate new terms. But even that won't be easy. The FTC isn't the only one trying to stop the takeover battle of the century. The U.K.'s Competition and Markets Authority (CMA) ruled in April that it could approve the deal.

The UK announced its largest-ever military aid package to Ukraine last week. This brings the UK's total aid for the year to £3 billion (about $4.6 trillion). While this is less than the United States' recent announcement of $50 billion, it is still a significant amount of money considering the UK's economic situation.
