However, the study suggests that if current growth slows, AI's impact on the environment may be less than feared. Many experts, including the report's authors, say such studies are speculative because tech companies don't release enough data to make accurate predictions. However, there is no doubt that AI requires more powerful hardware than traditional computing tasks.

This year's AI rally has been mostly a U.S. story, led by the Big Seven - Apple, Alphabet, Meta, Amazon, Microsoft, Nvidia, and Tesla. But Ewan Markson-Brown, manager of the CRUX Asia All-Japan Fund, says there are companies in Asia that are well-positioned to benefit from the rise of AI but are being ignored by investors. The former Baillie Gifford fund manager allocates all of his investments in Taiwan and South Korea to AI-related companies. He is bullish on the prospects of AI-related companies in Asia, holding Taiwanese printed circuit board maker Unimicron, among others. The biggest player in the region, however, is China, which Markson Brown sees as a credible competitor to the United States in AI.

Microsoft will unveil a dedicated chip for artificial intelligence development and services next month. The company will showcase its homegrown AI chip at its annual developer conference, "MS Ignite," on Nov. 14-17 in Seattle, Washington. The new chip is a datacenter server for training and inferring large-scale language models (LLMs) that Microsoft has been developing under the project name "Athena" and was initially expected to be released early next year. Microsoft said Athena will perform better than existing AI chips, saving time and money on AI tasks.

Google held a new product announcement event, Made by Google, in New York City, where it unveiled its latest smartphones, the Pixel 8 series. The price of the Pixel 8 base model and the high-end Pixel 8 Pro has increased by $100 from a year ago. Prices start at $699 for the base model and $999 for the Pro model. While the base model is still $100 less than the iPhone 15, the Pro is priced at the same level as the iPhone 15 Pro, reflecting Google's confidence. "The new price reflects the upgraded display and camera," said Google product manager Patrick Hennessey, "which is beyond what we've been showing." Most notably, the Pixel 8 Pro features Google's homegrown Tensor G3 chip, which allows it to utilize artificial intelligence and machine learning resources. In particular, the Pixel 8 Pro features enhanced AI-powered editing tools.
